Main Street Elementary Playground Art Collaboration Project

This collaborative project between Main Street Elementary (MSE) and Troy Buchanan High School (TBHS) Art Department was initiated to transform MSE’s newly resurfaced but unpainted playground into a colorful, engaging, and inclusive play space.
The idea originated when MSE leadership proposed a partnership with TBHS art students to design and paint interactive playground murals, including sensory paths, games, and imaginative scenes. TBHS art teacher and students eagerly joined the effort, creating several design concepts through their Drawing and Painting II class. MSE staff and students provided feedback to ensure the artwork reflected how children use the playground and supported active play and creativity.
With approval from district administration and paint provided by the facilities department, work began in early August. High school students, teachers, and volunteers painted a vibrant space-themed mural featuring interactive elements such as hopscotch, mazes, and movement-based designs. The project fostered strong school-to-school collaboration, as several TBHS students were MSE alumni and expressed pride in contributing to their former school.
Students and staff at MSE immediately embraced the new designs, which encouraged movement, imaginative play, and joyful engagement. Additional features, such as a lion-themed “pitcher’s mound” and a pond mural, are planned for completion during the school year, with continued support from TBHS art students.
This project exemplifies creative collaboration, student leadership, and community pride, while enhancing the physical environment and social-emotional experiences of MSE students.
