Welcome and Introductions
The meeting was called to order, and members introduced themselves. The committee reviewed the meeting agenda.
Purpose and Membership of SHAC
The committee reviewed the purpose of the School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), why the district maintains the committee, and SHAC membership and representation.
The committee also reviewed work completed during the previous school year, including establishing a district-level wellness committee and renaming the committee the School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC).
Triennial Assessment
The committee briefly reviewed the district’s Triennial Wellness Assessment and discussed how the assessment helps identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvement within the district’s wellness program.
Wellness Policy
An update was provided regarding the district Wellness Policy. The policy is currently on hold while the district’s policy provider makes revisions. The updated policy is expected to be presented to the Board of Education for a first reading in October.
Smart Snacks and Classroom Celebrations
The committee discussed several nutrition-related topics:
-
Latchkey has updated snack offerings to meet Smart Snacks standards.
-
Members noted that more buildings appear to be using non-food items for classroom celebrations.
-
During the summer, a building asked whether the student handbook could be changed to state that food would not be permitted for classroom celebrations. The committee discussed the importance of not making a building-specific change until SHAC could consider the issue and determine whether a consistent district-wide approach should be recommended.
-
Concerns were discussed regarding vending machines offering items that may not meet Smart Snacks standards, including possible energy drink options, and vending machine availability during the school day.
-
Julie Parrish, Chartwells, will contact vending vendors to determine whether buildings can be provided with Smart Snacks-compliant options when placing orders.
Staff Wellness
Kaytlynn Wethington discussed supporting staff wellness initiatives through school nurses and building-level wellness committees.
Upcoming staff wellness opportunities include:
-
A mammography van scheduled for October.
-
A staff flu vaccination clinic through Mercy Pharmacy scheduled for October.
Mende will remind school nurses at the next nurse staff meeting that their building wellness committee should meet at least once per quarter. Building wellness teams will be responsible for identifying and implementing wellness initiatives appropriate for their individual buildings.
Communication and Community Involvement
The committee discussed how SHAC information is communicated to staff, families, and the community. SHAC meeting information and minutes will be shared through ParentSquare and the district website.
Community members are encouraged to participate in SHAC meetings. Meeting dates, times, and other information will be available on the district website.
2026–2027 SHAC Goals
The committee discussed establishing 2–3 measurable wellness goals for the 2026–2027 school year.
Mende will create a Google survey and send it to SHAC members to gather ideas for potential district wellness goals. The ideas will then be shared with building wellness teams so they can select areas of focus appropriate for their buildings during the school year.
